P. D. Viner

Crime writer, film-maker, creator of study-guides, father of a teenage daughter, husband, baker (pretty good sourdough loaves and cinnamon buns) and something cool and edgy like guitar player or slam poet or something. I’ll add that later when I work out what being cool really is.

I was born in South London and was given my first super 8mm camera at age 9. My first film was the crime classic The Pearl, and of course I wrote, directed, edited and starred (there’s a link to watch it below). It began a life long love of the movies and mystery. As a teen I became obsessed with the theatre and was lucky enough to live close to a youth theatre. I was there every night for five years. I went to film school and then on to a film MA at VGIK in Moscow. During my year there I was mugged by 6-year-olds, gassed, shot at, and threatened by the mafia. My salad days. After that I ran away to join a cult (that’s how my mum thought of the holistic arts centre I worked at in New York) and emigrated to New Zealand with my fiancĂ© (dumped before we even got there). I came home and started SmartPass with my sister – the best GCSE and general audio study guides to Shakespeare and the classics that you could hope for. I fell in love with a brilliant woman and tricked her into thinking I was marriage material. We had a daughter, who is now a teenager (where did the time go?) and she is a total joy. And finally I discovered my love of killing people, and have never been happier. So that’s me. And if you haven’t read my books, then what are you waiting for?
